Hi im wanting ideas of what i can do. My dad is disabled he is completley deaf from one ear and pretty deaf from the other one.He just had open heart surgery which has affected his hearing even more. Now the hearing aid that he got a little over a year ago and which medicaid/medicare paid for is not working for him at all anymore. We took him to the ear doctor and they tested him and showed the results in paper. We went to the medicaid and medicare office and they said they only cover one every 5-6 years. My dad is very depressed and Im wanting to know if anybody know where I can look for help, or if there is anyway to appeal this. Its not like he is trying to get a new one he really needs it. Hes 54. Please any ideas are welcomed. Thankyou

Chosen Answer:

well,it seems that he is disabled, so you can get disability and that brings in money, and medicare probabley wont help because you have to be 62-65 to be able to get medicare. You can try with medicaid again and if hes not retired he can apply for unemployment.
I hope the best for you and your family.

After a long wait I have a hearing aid for each ear from the NHS which are excellent but I need to tweak one of them up a bit. Don’t suggest going back to the NHS as it took me nearly four years to get them. They look very simple and each one has a small plastic ‘door’ which if I could get this off might house a screw that I could turn. Any ideas please as I don’t want to break them. I am fairly handy with tools.
Thank you Crock for your wise reply but I cannnot wait four years to get an adjustment no matter what the time wait should be – its not 4 weeks.

Book an appointment, it’s a free service and they may surprise you by seeing you within 4 weeks…

Our daughter bought my husband a very expensive hearing aid. It has been adjusted twice and he wears it for a few days and then gives up. He is doing himself a dis-service because he does not fully hear conversations, ask continually for whoever to repeat things. I feel like I am wasting my breath when speaking to him, because he doesn’t hear me, I either have to shout or keep repeating myself over and over again.
If he did not have an aid I could understand it, but he has something that could help him. I have suggested he use it just in the house with just the two of us, so that he can used to it, if that is what is borhter him, but he won’t do it. He is not a miserable man, everybody loves him, but at home with him continually having to shout, repeat and suffer the t.v. up soooo loud, I am getting so frustrated. I would like to find a way, a positive way, to get him to use it so that he would be able to get used to it. Any suggestions?

Chosen Answer:

The above suggestions seem very reasonable. I hope they work. Of course they may backfire, and he may start isolating himself more. I hope not.

I suggest that you talk with him to find out exactly why he stops using the aid. Is it pride, ego, the implication of getting old, or is it an auditory problem.

Often people dislike certain background sounds amplified. Sometimes they have trouble disriminating speech (with the aid) because of all the background noise that they can’t block out. Normally, without aids we can hear all that but over time we have learned not to register the “noise,” unless its very loud.

Some of the modern aids can be tuned to make some frequencies soft and others loud. Like your voice can be made louder than other sounds, so he could hear you well but not pots and pans banging or dishes clanging. If the aid has that capability, you or the audiologist could quiz your husband to find specifically what sounds or frequencies are disturbing, and fine tune the aid, and also your voice frequency could be amplified.

Or it could be that over time his auditory processing will adjust so that he hears what’s important and hears less of what isn’t. The brain can and does do that. If that is the case, then perhaps a whole family conference discussing the problem with him may be motivating for him to continue wearing the aid. Perhaps he would be willing to set a specific goal, e.g. he promises to wear the aid continually for one month, except when sleeping. That would be an excellent trial to see if his brain adjusts to the aid.

So I suggest you consider these approaches, and I truly hope some of these suggestions work for both of you.

Good Luck Maureen!

I want to get one thing straight, IM NOT DEAF. I still meet the required watts without my hearing aid. I just have one so I can hear better when people are talking to me clo

I asked this once before, an I got responses like “I wouldn’t want my life to depend on a deaf person” you people are completely and utterly rude. There’s a difference in being deaf and having slight hearing loss. I would like an answer from an ACTUAL LEO. Again, I do meet the hearing requirements without my hearing. So techanly I wouldn’t have to wear it.
**Can I be a Police Officer if I wear a hearing aid.

Chosen Answer:

If you can pass the physical without an aide then you can be hired.
I would not wear it during hiring or training.

I have been dating this guy for about 2 month now, we have similar issues with our family life (except his was much harder than mine). He’s been on his own since he was 16, and I’ve been on my own since college.

I lost my hearing when I was 11/12 years old…I have worn a hearing aid since I was 15, and had a very angry childhood. Things have always been hard for me, but as I matured and learned things can be very easy if adapted correctly. My friends have learned to adapt to me, phone conversations and social settings.

However, with my bf we have trouble communicating sometimes, but that’s because he’s never been around someone with a hearing loss. I try to explain my feelings and discuss with him things to help improve things…but one of my friends thinks he’s selfish – he doesnt want to learn the whole story…just the part to where it becomes easier for him. He says he cares about me…but how can he when I try to get my feelings across, but its how he feels thats important.
It’s hard to talk about something like this sometimes, because I have already been accepted to my friends. How do I explain this to my bf? There are different techniques that i can write a list of what he should or shouldn’t do, but I sometimes question if he’s willing to work at it? I dont want to break up with him yet, I just want him to understand how frustrating it is for the both of us. Not just him….and I don’t want him to keep getting mad. Anger doesn’t resolve anything. Why does this have to be so hard for him?

Chosen Answer:

Some people are very slow to learn the difficulties that are faced by people who are deaf or hard of hearing. I have worked with hearing impaired people for 14 years, and I am still amazed at how some people are so slow to adapt to dealing with someone who has a hearing loss.

You are going to have to be open and honest with your boyfriend about what it is like to be hard of hearing. He needs to understand and accept that he needs to communicate with you in a different way than he would someone with perfect hearing. If he cannot adapt and learn a different system of communication, then he needs to move on, and so do you.

Your hearing is a part of you, just like your vision, your height, your weight, the color of your skin, the color of your hair, and the shape of your body. He needs to accept each and every part of you, including your hearing loss. He will either be willing to do this, or he won’t. This in and of itself, is a good indicator of your compatibility. If he cannot seem to get beyond modifying his behavior to compensate for your hearing issues, then alas you will probably need to move on.

Maybe you should look for a book that talks about hearing loss and have him read it to understand what issues you face as a hearing impaired person. It is something that many people misunderstand. If you feel he is worth it, and willing to learn, take the time to educate him.

Good luck.

My sister is deaf in one ear. It’s due to a deformity and so hearing aids are of no use.

Anyway, she is looking into getting an mp3. Problem is, almost all players play on stereo, and listening to it on mono mode would be better for my sister (or so she says (: )

Sooo.. are there any mp3/4 players that can switch to mono mode?

I also heard there’s an adaptor that can be attached to the earphones so that the music comes out mono anyway.

Is it possible to convert the music file so it plays in mono?

thanks for and light you can shed on this
thanks chris I’ve tried that. but none of the local stores have it. I’ll have to consider buying it online i guess.

Chosen Answer:

At many stores you can buy headphones with the choice of playing in stereo or mono. You may want to pick up a pair, they’re relatively cheap. I would start my search at a store the specializes in sound (such as Tweeter) and ask a sales clerk. An yes your sister is correct, it will be better as with stereo often vocals are dominant on one side and instrumentals on the other. I wish you success in your search.
